The Minister for Communications and Digitalization Engages NITA
The meeting, which was the first after her reappointment as the Minister for the sector with an expanded responsibility in Digitalization, was meant to have an open discussion of issues pertaining to NITA’s mandate with focus on digitalization and the Agency’s general mandate on regulation of the ICT sector. The meeting was also aimed at offering staff the opportunity to share their ideas on the new responsibilities of the Agency. Staff of NITA indeed had the opportunity to express their views on issues, challenges, and concerns in their areas of work.
Addressing the staff, the sector Minister explained to them the rationale behind the Digitalization agenda of the government and the critical role NITA needs to play in ensuring its realization. She reaffirmed her commitment to supporting the Agency in diverse ways to ensure that it assumes the center stage of the Digitalization drive of the government.
In answering questions and general comments by staff, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, admitted that there may be issues with remunerations and general working conditions, but that can change if NITA decides to focus strategically on its core mandate and if everybody will come onboard and work towards achieving the set goals. She further advised employees to contribute their quota to the development of the Agency because it is only by giving off their best that they can also demand what they expect from NITA.
On his side, the Director General of NITA, Mr. Richard Okyere-Fosu, on behalf of the employees commended the Minister for the visit, despite her busy schedules. He assured the Minister of the commitment of management and staff to deliver on their mandates.
Mr. Okyere-Fosu further reiterated a comment made earlier by Head of Regulatory, Mr. Kwame Baah Acheamfuor, about NITA needing a reorientation of mindset. He said,” what NITA needs is to refocus the mindset of its people. This will enable us chart a course as regulator in the ICT space”. He added that “a lot has to be done to get us to where we need to be, but we are committed to working hard together to achieve all our goals that are in line with the realization of the vision of the Agency”.
Present at the meeting were the Director General, Deputy Director General, members of management, and several staff of the National Information Technology Agency.
